1 Kings 19: 11-12 “And He said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”
There is never a need for the Father to yell or shout. The reason why He whispers is for us to learn to strain our ears for His voice. It has to do with seek Me and you will find Me. There have been times (actually many) when that quiet whisper has destroyed me. Let me explain.
We have a one-acre hobby farm in western Nebraska with a lot of trees. In the spring the birds love to nest in them. We had quite a windstorm and I was out in the yard picking up branches before I was going to mow the lawn. I found a baby bird that couldn’t have been more than a day old lying in the grass. She was injured. I got Della and together we couldn’t think of anything else but to help her. It was as if God whispered, “I have all the rest of the birds in My care, see what you two can do with one.” One leg was broken and the other splayed out to the side. We fed her, bathed her, and cherished her. She brought us so much joy. She burned into us the meaning of compassion.
Then I heard the whisper, “I wish you had that kind of compassion for My children.” Well, that crushed me. And He was right! But His whisper changed me in an instant. I became a different man. Again, there was no need to shout.
We had ‘Baby’ for three weeks and one day and then her heart gave out. We were completely devastated by it all. Yet in her brief time with us she was able to change my heart towards God’s children in such a tender way. I am grateful to God and to Baby and for any way I can help His children. Please, listen for the whisper.
