Search the Scriptures

John 5: 39 (ESV) “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.”

John 14: 26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

Job 11: 5-7 “But oh, that God would speak and open his lips to you, and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves. Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?”

It is in the Scriptures that the Trinity reveal themselves to us. Their communication is precise and specific. The Scriptures talk of all three individually and also as one. If our lives are to be woven into a relationship with them, then we must search them out through the Scriptures. All instruction for this present life and eternal life is written down for us to seek and follow. And they are expressed so clearly as to leave no doubt of their meaning.

Why then do I spend more time watching TV than reading the Bible? What gets me sidetracked to less important stuff? Yes, I read in the morning, but do the day-to-day things numb my brain so I cannot refocus myself back to the book in the afternoon or evening? Or is there something else going on? And most of all, since I write so much about correcting our walk with the Lord and fail to do it myself, how big of a hypocrite does that make me? I guess I have lots of questions this morning.

Obviously, the Scripture in Job, “That God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves.” is actually proclaiming good fortune for a man like me. This has also produced what is called in 2 Corinthians 7 a godly grief that leads to repentance. “For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret.” I need the Scriptures. And I need brothers and sisters in Christ who will point this stuff out to me. A battle rages to steal our eternal life from us! We need to have each other’s back and fight together against the foe and not with each other.

Have you ever watched a marathon race? There always seems to be that one person who has run all the way but the last one hundred feet and can’t go one step further. They are dead tired, and their legs no longer work. Then we see someone stop and catch them and help them the last few steps over the finish line. Today I feel like the guy who needs someone to help me across the line. Can we all help each other, please?
