Seek Ye First

Psalm 53: 2 (ESV) “God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.”

If I were limited to only one thought that I could share with you, this would be what I would say: Seek God with your whole heart! Deut. 4: 29 “you will seek the Lord your God and you will find Him, if you search after Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

The Bible has many promises of what will happen if we seek Him. But by far the greatest promise is that we will find Him. I have been walking this walk for a long time, so please listen to an old man. Seek God with your whole heart! Let me explain.

A while ago I bought a new bible, fresh with nothing underlined in it. I started at Gen. 1:1 and read through to Rev. 22:21. I did not read it as different books or by chapter and verse. I read it as one book and as if it was written to me alone. I asked the Lord for two things. Reveal to me what You want me to know about You and show me what You want me to change about myself.

What an adventure! The first thing I discovered was that there is no magic to seeking the Lord. He has placed all we need to know within the pages of His Book. As I read, the thirst for God began to boil up inside me to a point where it consumed my every thought. His majesty shines out through every page. Over and over again I read that He is steadfast love and faithfulness. Not faithfulness to give me things I want but faithfulness in His patience with me.

I became very small as His presence overwhelmed me. He shared with me a great misconception of mine. After 54 years of trying to follow Christ, I thought I was pretty far down the road. However, it’s evident I’ve only taken a few steps. But my seeking Him pleases Him, so although it’s only a few steps at least it’s the right road. There were times when I shook and trembled because what I was reading about living life the right way did not describe me at all. It hurt but it was true.

The Book will remove all arrogance from you. It will replace pride with humility. But it will also replace loneliness with comfort. He has placed His wonder in there for all of us to see. So even though we are all different from each other, the Bible is special to each one of us. There is no disappointment in the Bible. Think of it as His letter of love to you and let that love flood your soul.

Read it! Believe it! Do it!

Amen?
